Gliding at The Mynd
Gliding at The Mynd
Sunrise on The Mynd. Alas, I never got there as I was back stateside by the time the club went there for its annual outing. Bungee launch, anyone? Gliding at The Mynd

Upwood Operations 1993
Nene Valley Gliding Club 1993
We returned to RAF Upwood near Ramsey in Cambridgeshire in the summer of 1993 for the closure of RAF Bentwaters and a vacation. By then much of the old crew were gone and the Ka-7 that I had first soloed in had been repainted in blue. (1993) First Flight in K7
First Glider Ride, NVGC
My first ride in a glider at the Nene Valley Gliding Club, RAF Upwood, Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. I believe that Dave Bourne is the GIB, or guy-in-back. The NVGC raised money with an Open Day. For 2 pounds, you would get two rides. It was great fun. (1988)

Horace and Doris Bryant. Horace was my flight instructor, which may or may not have been a good thing. I did solo and I never crashed, so he must have done something right. First Flight in K7

Horace, Doris, Eric with Richard in the back seat. Richard openly admitted that he did not like to fly in the front. Now where is Horace's dog Toby?

The Oly and what's his name. I will remember him. He was retired US military and worked as a butcher at the RAF Alconbury Commissary. The Oly on the winch

Solo in the K8, NVGC
Sortie Surge in the K8 - It was my last time flying in England, and the guys at the Nene Valley Gliding Club winched me aloft 8 times. (1989) Upwood Operations

Open Day 1988 was a brisk one. We all froze waiting two hours to go aloft. But it was a blast!

A tire holds the wing down of the Ka-8. I managed to solo in both the Ka-7 and Ka-8 before I left. Horace told me the Ka-8 was like the 7 but with power steering. Good deception. T-21B Slingsby

Memebership Card for the Nene Valley Gliding Club
NVGC Membership Card, 1989
Membership has its privileges. A launch was 2 back then, if I remember correctly. We lived on a lot of charity from the British government in the form of a sports grant. I doubt that the club even paid rent on the airfield facilities. Hail and farewell to the Captain and his wife
NVGC Farewell
John Taylor presents us with a hand-etched pitcher with the NVGC emblem. John was quite the artist. We still display that small trophy and consider it one of our dearest possessions.

CUGC, RAF Duxford
For my birthday in 1989, my wife enrolled me in a week's flying course at the Cambridge University Gliding Club, RAF Duxford. A good time was had by all. This is the Ka-13 that the students flew.
Hartford, Wisconsi, glider flight
Hartford, Wisconsin
I took advantage of the chance to fly a Blanik L-23 in Hartford, Wisconsin. The model I flew was the 18 meter variety with the registration of N106LW--Long Wing. We went IFR for a few instances when clouds surrounded us.
Mile High Gliding, Boulder, Colorado
I took a trip up to the Mile High Glider Port in Boulder, Colorado, where I flew a Grob-102. A mid-air between a powered aircraft and a glider took place in 2010 at this same airfield.
