Reverend Edward Kasten

With hope in the resurrection, we commend to the Lord Reverend Edward F. Kasten who died on Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at the age of 94.

Born on August 28, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Father Kasten began his priestly formation at Saint Francis de Sales Major Seminary in September of 1950, after graduating previously from Marquette University with a B.A. in Education, and serving in the United States Army for three years (1943-1946). Father Kasten was sent to Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, for his continued study and formation during the period of 1950-1954. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 1954 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukee, by Most Reverend Roman R. Atkielski.

Father Kasten was appointed on October 5, 1954 to serve as an assistant at St. Frederick Parish, Cudahy. On June 26, 1956, he was appointed to St. Francis Minor Seminary, to serve as a professor and faculty member. Father was appointed on June 19, 1979 to the faculty at St. Joan Antida High School, Milwaukee; he retired from active ministry on May 31, 1990.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Father Kasten will be celebrated at 3:00pm on Friday, January 11, 2019, Holy Spirit Chapel, at Alexian Village, Milwaukee, (9301 N. 76th Street). Priest friends and former colleagues are invited to concelebrate; please bring an alb and white stole. Visitation will also take place at Alexian Village, January 11, beginning at 2:00pm and continuing until time for the funeral liturgy.

Members of the Purgatorial Society will please offer the prescribed Mass for the repose of his soul and include Father Kasten’s intention in the General Intercessions at the parish.

Born to Eternal Life on January 1, 2019 at the age of 94. Beloved son of the late Edward and the late Gertrude (Nee Ponschok). Father Kasten was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He served as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II. He attended Marquette University, Saint Francis de Sales Major Seminary, and Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. In 64 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, he served as professor and parish priest. He was a longtime faculty member at St. Francis DeSales Seminary and St. Joan Antida High School. Father Ed will be remembered for his cheerful wit and his faithful dedication to the mission of educating young women and men in the Archdiocese. He is survived by many cousins and friends.

Visitation Friday, January 11, 2019, Holy Spirit Chapel, at Alexian Village, 9301 N. 76th Street, from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00 P.M.
